Rescue Referral

We offer a no-cost rescue referral service for your convenience, which is only available to people with email capabilities. Because this is no-cost, we can not return long distance calls. You are welcome to call us at 607-895-6129 between 1:00 PM and 8:00 PM, EST/EDT.

What we do is act as a matchmaking service. When, in our opinion, we believe that we have the right dog for the right person or family, we will put you in touch with each other, with your advance approval. We do work diligently to place the right dog in the right home.

If you can't keep your Elkhound:
We need to know the dog's date of birth, sex, and precisely why you can't keep your dog. Don't make something up, please. If you are having problems with the dog, there are a lot of nice people out there who are willing to work with dogs. We also know that there are situations like divorce, moving, or sometimes, people who just pick out the wrong dog for their lifestyle. These things happen. We would rather help you find a good home for your dog, and the more truthful you are with us, the better chance your dog has. You will have to tell us how you have kept the dog, the type of training it's had (if any), where it was purchased, and what you perceive as difficulties.

If you want a rescue Elkie:
Tell us what you would like -- age, sex, and why. Tell us about the way you live, your family, and what you are willing to do--are you willing to work with a dog that has problems, or do you want a trained dog? At the minimum, you need at least a small fenced yard, or a lot of open land. You need to tell us about the amount of time you have to spend with the dog, and where it will be kept when you are away. The more you can tell us about what you are willing to do, the more it will help us to find you the dog you want.

Rescue Services at Castlebar Elkhounds

We do not have a very large kennel -- space is limited, because of the level of personal care and attention that we provide for our dogs.

We have been very successful working with Elkhounds that have been abused, that bite, or Elkhounds that are supposedly "not good" with children. This effort takes a lot of time and love, so we are only able to take in one or two dogs at a time. The results provide wonderful gratification for our efforts. We have rehabilitated dogs that were frightened of children and would bite first, that now tumble playfully and harmlessly with little children, and protect them. We have been able to diagnose dogs that were mistreated, and gain their confidence and trust.

If we have the space available, we definitely will take a dog that bites. However, the retraining process takes a long time so call for details.
